After the game, Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou spoke to the press in London, England, according to Football London. “I think we could have won a little bit more comfortably. Their goalkeeper made seven saves,” he was asked.
“Their goalkeeper had a really good game”
Maybe we could have won a little more comfortably. There is always a little stress and anxiety for the players, so we expected it to be a difficult game. We were looking for a win after four consecutive defeats, so we needed it badly.”
“They were a team with nothing to lose, but our approach was good. I think we controlled the first half very well. Of course, we lacked decisiveness.”
Postecoglou was asked about Mickey van der Vaan, who scored the game-winning goal. “It’s interesting,” he said. This is van der Vaan’s first season in the Premier League. It’s the same with Vicario and Udoğlu. Our players have grown tremendously and everything they’ve been through this year has been good for us. Van der Vaan has missed a lot of time with injury, but he’s still performing at an elite level. He’s recovered very well and I’m happy for him.”
Later in the game, van der Vaan moved as if he was playing left fullback instead of center back. “Compared to center-back, playing full-back requires more physicality,” said Postecoglou. At the end of the game, van der Vaan did that and it was positive that Radu Dragusin came on. Van der Vaan’s goal was outstanding.”
Prior to the match,
The Athletic in England announced that the striker was out for the season. “He picked up an injury at the end of the last game,” said Postecoglou. We didn’t think it was serious. But by that evening, he hadn’t recovered and we sent him to the hospital to have his calf injury examined. To be honest, I don’t know the outcome. When I saw him today, he was still in some discomfort,” said Hichalisson on the situation.
“It’s an injury that makes it difficult for us,” he added.
With the win, Tottenham kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive. “We still need six more points,” said Postecoglou. It’s an important point for us. We have a big game against Manchester City on the 15th and we have to see how far our football can work, what points we can get and how it ends. After four defeats in a row, it can be heavy. Confidence and trust can be undermined. But today the players handled it well and laid the foundations to at least see hope.”
With their fourth-place fight hopes alive, Tottenham host league leaders Manchester City on Sept. 15.
“I think we have the ability to get a result,” Postecoglou said. “City are an excellent team and are currently the benchmark of the league along with Arsenal. They are more than 20 points ahead of us. We have to work for more points. It’s a 95-minute game. We will try,” he added.
