‘Courier Cross’ Lee explodes for second assist of the season in final game of the year

Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) Lee Kang-in, 22, celebrated his final game of the year with a second assist.

Lee set up Vitinha’s opener four minutes into the second half of the 2023-2024 Ligue 1 Round 17 home match against FC Metz at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France, on Sept. 21 (ET). PSG went on to win 3-1 with Kylian Mbappe adding a brace.

It was Lee’s second assist of the season, coming nearly two months after his first against Brest in the 10th round on October 29. He has two goals and two assists this season, including one in the league and one in the UEFA Champions League.

Starting on the left wing, Lee tried his hand at attacking from the flanks and the center of the field, but without much success. In response, PSG coach Luis Enrique moved Lee to right winger at the start of the second half, and the effect was immediate.

Four minutes into the second half, Lee’s ‘courier cross’ broke the deadlock. Lee’s left-footed cross from the right was met by Vitinha, who was rushing into the box, with a non-stop right-footed shot to open the scoring.

PSG doubled their lead in the 15th minute of the second half when Mbappe scored with a right-footed curling shot. Metz pulled one back in the 27th minute when Mathieu Woodall scored from a corner kick.

Mbappe sealed the victory in the 38th minute. After intercepting an opponent’s back pass, he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and calmly finished to complete his hat-trick. It was the 18th goal of the season for Mbappe, who leads the league in goals.

Lee was replaced by Gonzalo Hamus in the 47th minute. He added one assist, completed 94% of his passes (51/54), touched the ball 68 times, and created three chances.

The 3-1 win extended PSG’s unbeaten run to 12 matches (10 wins, 2 draws). With 40 points, they remain five points clear of second-place Nice (35).

Today’s match against Metz is PSG’s final match of the year. PSG will have a three-week break before returning home to face Reims in Round 18 on January 15.
